Scientific Background

DNA testing is a modern genetics technique that we apply for routine clinical genetic testing (www.immd.de). An individual's genetic material is replicated in every cell of the body, and the parentage of a child can be determined by analyzing this material from the parents and from the child. Our institute generally requires a saliva or blood sample from both parents and from the child in order to perform a genetic analysis. According to guidelines issued by the Robert Koch Institute/Federal Institute for Infectious Diseases, testing in this case is 99.99% accurate.

Testing can indicate with 100% accuracy that the test subject is not the father of the child.

Testing Procedure

If you have decided in favor of testing, IMMD is sending sterile swabs in transport capsules to your address. Please note the following before taking a saliva sample:

• Do not eat or drink anything for at least 30 minutes prior to sampling.
• To collect a sample, rub a swab back and forth ten times on the inside of each cheek. (Please rub vigorously so that sufficient mucous membrane cells adhere to the swab.)
• Next, place the swab a few centimeters into the plastic capsule and allow it to air dry for at least 2 hours.
• Once the swab is dry, grasp the protruding end of the swab and press it firmly into the capsule to close the tube. Place the sample tubes in an envelope and mail them to the institute.
