The Human Blueprint
The genes of every cell in the human body contain all of an individual's unique genetic information. The genes themselves form larger cellular segments of chromosomes. The matrix contained within these chromosomes is used to assemble an entire human being. This human "blueprint" consists of two sets of chromosomes: one half from the father and the other half from the mother. DNA patterns from both parents and from the child are all compared with each other when preparing a certificate of paternity.
Testing consists of two stages: DNA fragments are first analyzed using the same electrophoretic technique used in forensic medicine. Once an individual's unique features (his "genetic fingerprint") have been established, a biostatistical procedure is used to determine the probability of paternity with accuracy approaching 100%.
